Mabrokan’s Legacy Lives On: Cloned Camels Shine at ADIHEX

From beauty pageants to biotechnology, the UAE blends heritage with innovation as two cloned offspring of the legendary camel take centre stage in Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi witnessed a remarkable moment this week as two cloned camels took centre stage on the fourth day of the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX). These camels are the offspring of Mabrokan — one of the UAE’s most iconic and valuable beauty pageant champions.

Mabrokan, who passed away in 2010, left behind a legacy of victories in prestigious camel beauty contests. Determined to preserve his bloodline, the UAE’s Biotech Research Centre froze his cells. Years later, that foresight has paid off: scientists successfully cloned 11 calves, with two of them making their debut appearance at ADIHEX.

A Showcase of Science, Not Sale

The two cloned camels, now four years old, were not auctioned or offered for sale. Instead, they were presented as living examples of how science can help safeguard cultural heritage while pushing the boundaries of innovation. Their presence was a celebration of hard work by local researchers, reinforcing the UAE’s role as a global hub for biotechnology and heritage preservation.

Camel Auctions Remain a Key Attraction

Beyond the cloned stars, the camel auction at ADIHEX drew strong interest. According to WAM, total sales so far have reached Dh1.7 million ($480,000) — following Dh2.5 million in last year’s edition. The auction showcased young, purebred Arabian camels from highly regarded bloodlines, complete with detailed pedigree records, underlining the deep cultural and economic value these animals continue to hold.

ADIHEX: More Than an Exhibition

Organised by ADNEC in collaboration with the Emirates Falconers’ Club, ADIHEX has grown into the region’s largest event of its kind. Running until September 7, this year’s edition spans 15 diverse sectors, from heritage to high-tech innovation.

The programme includes:

  • Eight falcon auctions — four held in advance and four during the event
  • A falcon beauty contest
  • An Arabian Saluki beauty contest
  • Competitions for the most beautiful falcon hood and perch

Since its inception, ADIHEX has welcomed more than two million visitors, each year expanding its role as a meeting point between past traditions and future innovations.

A Living Symbol of Emirati Identity

For many Emiratis, the sight of Mabrokan’s cloned offspring carried a profound cultural message. Camels have long been more than animals — they are companions, carriers, and cultural icons. The cloning project demonstrates that while science may be modern, its mission here is timeless: to protect and carry forward the heritage of the desert for generations to come.

As one visitor put it: “This exhibition is not only about showcasing animals. It is about honouring who we are, where we come from, and how we adapt for the future.”

From The Gulf Talk perspective

ADIHEX once again proves that the UAE is uniquely placed to blend heritage, innovation, and identity. The story of Mabrokan’s clones is not just about science — it is about culture living on, proud and strong, in the heart of the desert.
