Perseids Meteor Shower Shines Over UAE Skies Despite Full Moon Glow

Annual celestial spectacle delights Gulf stargazers, though lunar brightness dims meteor visibility

by Soofiya

One of the world’s most anticipated celestial events, the Perseids meteor shower, lit up skies over the UAE this week, peaking late Tuesday night and into the early hours of Wednesday. While bright fireballs streaked across the heavens, a full moon dulled the display, reducing the visibility of fainter meteors.

Under clear, moonless conditions, the Perseids can deliver 60–100 meteors per hour. This year, however, bright lunar light meant fewer sightings for residents. “Unfortunately, the full moon arrived just before the Perseid peak,” said Khadijah Ahmed, Operations Manager at Dubai Astronomy Group. “The moonlight washed out many meteors, but the shower remains one of the most spectacular events on the astronomical calendar.”

The Perseids occur annually when Earth passes through the dense debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle. The peak is usually observed on August 12 and 13, though this year’s best viewing may have been on July 24 under moonless skies.

Public Stargazing in Ras Al Khaimah

To mark the occasion, the Dubai Astronomy Group hosted a stargazing event on Jebel Jais, Ras Al Khaimah’s highest peak. Visitors used telescopes to observe planets, constellations, and the occasional meteor streak. “The meteor shower continues until late August,” Ms Ahmed said. “We may host another session on a moonless night for clearer views.”

In Abu Dhabi, Mohamed Usama Ismail of Al Sadeem Astronomy reminded residents that spotting meteors depends on “timing and luck.” He recalled that last year’s most spectacular night occurred a day after the official peak.

Declining Intensity Over the Years

Astronomers note that the Perseids are producing fewer meteors than in the 1990s, as the densest parts of the comet’s dust trail have gradually dispersed over time.

Next Celestial Highlights in the UAE

The UAE’s night sky has more events in store:

  • Total Lunar Eclipse – September 7, when the moon will turn a deep red as it passes through Earth’s shadow.
  • Hunter’s Supermoon – October 7
  • Beaver Supermoon – November 5
  • Cold Supermoon – December 4

Meteor showers will also continue:

  • Orionids → October 21–22
  • Leonids → November 17–18
  • Geminids → December 13–14 (considered the brightest of the year)

Next year’s Perseids are expected to coincide with perfect moonless skies, promising a far more dazzling spectacle for Gulf stargazers.
