After years of dominance, Soufiane El Bakkali has just one target remaining — the world record. The Moroccan star ruled the 3,000m steeplechase for four straight seasons, beginning with his breakthrough gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where he ended Kenya’s long-standing supremacy in the event.
He went on to secure back-to-back world titles and defended his Olympic crown at the Paris 2024 Olympics, joining an elite group of athletes to win consecutive Olympic golds.
Record in Focus
Now 30 and training in Ifrane, El Bakkali is shifting his focus from podium finishes to timing. The current world record of 7:52.11, held by Lamecha Girma, is firmly in his sights. With no Olympics or World Championships this season, the timing is ideal. “My number one goal is to break the world record,” he has said.
A Strategic Shift
In previous seasons, El Bakkali prioritised titles over records — a strategy that delivered consistent success. Now, the approach is different. With carefully selected races and favourable conditions, including potential attempts in Rabat, the Moroccan is aiming to maximise every opportunity. He has come close before, missing the record by just a few seconds — a sign that history is within reach.
Setback, Then Reset
His silver-medal finish at the World Athletics Championships 2025 was a rare setback. A late-race error allowed Geordie Beamish to claim gold, exposing the growing depth in the field. But the defeat has only added urgency to his mission.
Driven by Legacy
From his early days in Fes to global dominance, El Bakkali’s success has been built on discipline and belief. Inspired by Moroccan legend Hicham El Guerrouj, his mindset remains clear: train to win, and keep evolving.
What’s Next
Beyond the record, El Bakkali is targeting a third Olympic gold at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. With backing from Swiss brand On, he enters a new phase focused on peak performance and longevity.
