Heavy fog swept across the UAE on Wednesday morning, creating dangerous driving conditions and sharply reducing visibility on roads nationwide. Early morning fog is a familiar feature of the Emirates’ winter season, but it continues to pose serious risks for commuters, particularly along low-lying highways such as the E11 route linking Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Authorities are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution and adjust their driving habits to prevent accidents during periods of reduced visibility.
Keep a greater safety distance
In foggy conditions, maintaining extra distance from the vehicle ahead is critical. Reduced visibility increases reaction time and stopping distance, making close driving especially hazardous.
Do not use hazard lights while driving
Traffic experts warn that using hazard lights while the vehicle is in motion can confuse other drivers, who may not be able to tell whether a car is turning or slowing down. In the UAE, driving with hazard lights on unnecessarily can also lead to a Dh500 fine and four black points.
Adjust speed and maintain lane discipline
Motorists are advised to drive only as fast as visibility safely allows. When sight distance drops, speeds should be reduced significantly — sometimes to as low as 20–30 kph. Drivers should remain in their lanes and avoid sudden braking or swerving. If visibility becomes critically poor, authorities recommend pulling over in a safe, protected area away from active traffic lanes. Non-essential travel should be avoided during severe fog.
Use low-beam headlights and fog lights
Low-beam headlights should be used at all times in fog. Vehicles equipped with fog lights should activate them when rear visibility is limited to improve detection by other drivers. Full-beam headlights should be avoided, as they reflect off fog and worsen glare. Drivers are encouraged to check that all vehicle lights are functioning before setting out.
Avoid overtaking unless absolutely necessary
Overtaking in dense fog is highly risky due to limited forward visibility. Authorities advise drivers to change lanes only when they are certain the road ahead is clear.
Park safely if visibility becomes critical
In extremely dense fog where visibility approaches zero, motorists should park in a safe location away from moving traffic and switch on hazard lights only after stopping. Parking on active roadways or shoulders should be avoided whenever possible.
Fog remains one of the UAE’s most dangerous weather hazards for drivers. By reducing speed, using proper lighting, and following official safety guidance, motorists can significantly lower the risk of collisions and help keep roads safe during winter mornings.
