A Bold Vision From Orbit

A California-based space start-up is attracting global attention with an ambitious proposal to redirect sunlight from space and deliver it to selected locations on Earth after dark.

Reflect Orbital, founded in 2021, is developing a constellation of mirror-equipped satellites capable of reflecting natural sunlight onto targeted areas. The company says the technology could support renewable energy production, extend working hours in remote locations and provide illumination without the need for conventional electrical infrastructure.

Backed by investors including Sequoia Capital and Starship Ventures, the company describes its mission as developing technology that can “sell sunlight to those who need it”.

FCC Approval Moves Project Forward

The company’s plans took a significant step forward in July when the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the launch of Earendil-1, a demonstration satellite designed to test the concept in orbit. The spacecraft will carry a reflective mirror measuring roughly 59 feet across and is expected to direct a beam of sunlight spanning about five kilometres on the ground.

Reflect Orbital says the mission will help validate both the effectiveness of its technology and the safeguards built into the system before any larger-scale deployment.

Environmental Groups Push Back

The approval has triggered strong opposition from a coalition of environmental and conservation organisations, including Earthjustice, DarkSky International, Environment America, the American Bird Conservancy and Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility. The groups have filed a petition calling on the FCC to reverse its decision.

In their complaint, the organisations argue that Reflect Orbital’s business model of providing sunlight at night for uses such as powering solar farms, replacing street lighting and extending outdoor work hours could create serious environmental consequences.

The petition warns that introducing artificial daylight into naturally dark environments could affect ecosystems that depend on regular day-night cycles.

Concerns For Wildlife

Conservation groups argue that the proposed sunlight beams could disrupt the behaviour of nocturnal species that rely on darkness for survival.

According to the petition, a five-kilometre-wide beam of reflected sunlight could interfere with feeding patterns, navigation, reproduction and predator-prey relationships among birds, insects and other wildlife. Environmental advocates say even limited testing could provide a pathway towards a much larger network of reflective satellites in the future.

Critics fear that widespread deployment could significantly alter natural nighttime environments across the globe.

Astronomers Warn Of Dark Sky Impact

The project has also raised alarm within the astronomy community.

Experts warn that large reflective satellites could increase light pollution and make scientific observations more difficult. Some researchers argue that the reflected sunlight could appear brighter than the full Moon from within the illuminated area, potentially affecting telescopes and astronomical research.

With thousands of satellites already operating in low-Earth orbit, astronomers say additional reflective spacecraft could further complicate efforts to preserve dark skies for research and observation.

Human Health And Safety Questions

Opponents of the project also point to potential impacts on human health.

The petition argues that exposure to intense light during normal nighttime hours could disrupt sleep patterns, alter circadian rhythms and suppress melatonin production. The groups have additionally raised concerns about visibility and safety if reflected light is misdirected or affects populated areas unexpectedly.

Reflect Orbital Defends The Concept

Reflect Orbital maintains that its system is designed to provide precise, controlled illumination.

The company says reflected sunlight differs from conventional artificial lighting because it uses natural sunlight redirected from orbit. It also claims the technology is intended to illuminate only designated service areas while minimising light spill beyond target zones.

Marketing materials showcase potential applications across agriculture, shipping ports, disaster-response operations and renewable energy projects. Among the proposed benefits are longer working hours, extended growing seasons and increased use of solar infrastructure after sunset.

An Ambitious Long-Term Goal

While Earendil-1 is only a demonstration mission, Reflect Orbital has much larger ambitions.

The company hopes to have its first satellites operating by the end of the year and has outlined plans that could eventually see up to 50,000 mirror-equipped satellites deployed in low-Earth orbit by 2035.

As regulators, scientists and environmental groups debate the implications of artificial sunlight from space, the outcome of the Earendil-1 mission could shape the future of one of the most unconventional ideas emerging from the commercial space industry.
