Despite geopolitical tensions in the region following the Iran conflict, organisers of the Emirates Dubai Sevens remain confident that the Middle East’s biggest sports and entertainment festival will attract a strong international turnout when it returns later this year.
International Interest Remains Strong
Festival Director Mathew Tait has dismissed fears that regional instability could affect participation, revealing that registrations from overseas teams remain encouraging across multiple sports.
“We are confident that we will be in the same space as we were last year, if not up,” Tait said, noting that organisers continue to work closely with international teams to provide reassurance and updates on the situation in the UAE.
According to Tait, many international participants are receiving a clearer picture of conditions on the ground, helping maintain confidence in travelling to Dubai for the event.
Dubai’s Long Legacy in World Rugby
The Emirates Dubai Sevens will take place at The Sevens Stadium from November 27 to 29, once again serving as the opening leg of the HSBC SVNS World Series. Dubai has been one of the most iconic stops on the international sevens circuit since World Rugby established the global series in 1999.
Only once has Dubai been absent from the official world series calendar. In 2001, following the September 11 attacks in the United States, security concerns prompted several teams to withdraw. Despite the tournament being downgraded, many nations still competed, with New Zealand lifting the Emirates International Trophy.
That resilience has become a defining feature of the event over the past two decades.
From Rugby Tournament to Global Festival
What began as a rugby competition has evolved into one of the region’s largest sporting festivals.
The 2025 edition welcomed more than 88,000 spectators and participants, combining elite international rugby with community sports, live entertainment, music, hospitality experiences and family attractions.
Today, thousands of amateur athletes travel to Dubai every year to compete across several disciplines, making the event a major tourism and sporting attraction for the UAE.
Gaelic Football Makes Its Debut
A major highlight of the 2026 edition will be the introduction of Gaelic football, which becomes the sixth sport on the festival programme alongside rugby, cricket, netball, fitness and padel.
The competition will feature:
- Elite Men’s
- Elite Women’s
- Open Men’s
- Open Women’s
categories, all played in a specially adapted seven-a-side format in keeping with the event’s identity.
Tait said organisers had carefully considered the addition and were focused on ensuring every new sport adds value to the overall experience.
“If we’re adding new sports, it needs to be positively impactful on the event. Ultimately, we want to be a world-class experience for all those athletes coming in across the sports that we do.”
New Attractions for Spectators
Beyond the sporting action, organisers are continuing to invest in the fan experience.
This year’s festival will feature:
- A new zipline attraction
- A Ferris wheel
- The UAE’s largest-ever inflatable kids’ zone
- Expanded family entertainment areas
- Live music and festival experiences throughout the weekend
The enhancements form part of a broader strategy to keep the event fresh and attractive for returning visitors while drawing new audiences to the festival.
With ticket sales already underway and preparations progressing as planned, Dubai Sevens organisers believe the event is well-positioned to overcome geopolitical concerns and deliver another record-breaking edition.
