Gauff Reaches Another Career Milestone
Coco Gauff continued her impressive march through the National Bank Open with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 victory over Russian teenager Alina Korneeva to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
The American overcame an early service break and quickly asserted control over the contest, breaking straight back before taking command of the opening set. Gauff won three of Korneeva’s four service games in the first set and raised her level even further in the second, breaking all four times her opponent served.
Her latest victory also saw her join elite company. Gauff became only the second player to reach 25 WTA 1000 quarter-finals before her 23rd birthday, following in the footsteps of tennis great Martina Hingis, who reached 39 during her teenage years.
With her return game firing on all cylinders, Gauff won an impressive 42 of 68 return points and remains one of the strongest title contenders left in the draw.
Rybakina Battles Through a Three-Hour Thriller
Before Gauff took centre stage, Elena Rybakina survived one of the toughest tests of the tournament, defeating Liudmila Samsonova 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a gruelling encounter that lasted nearly three hours.
The Kazakh star found herself trailing 3-0 in the deciding set but showed remarkable resilience to reel off four consecutive games and turn the match around. Despite facing 13 break points, Rybakina consistently delivered under pressure and converted seven of her 17 break opportunities.
“I knew it would be a very tough match. It’s always a battle against Liudmila,” Rybakina said after sealing victory. “I’m so tired, but I’m super happy. I was just trying to focus one point at a time.”
The win sends the second seed into her fifth WTA 1000 quarter-final of the season.
Osaka Continues Her Resurgence
Naomi Osaka’s encouraging summer form continued as the four-time Grand Slam champion defeated Canadian favourite Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the last eight.
Osaka’s powerful serve proved decisive throughout the contest. The Japanese star struck seven aces and won more than 76 per cent of points behind her first serve while keeping Fernandez under constant pressure.
Her reward is a highly anticipated quarter-final clash against Rybakina, a matchup that brings together two of the most dangerous hitters on the WTA Tour.
With confidence steadily growing and her movement improving, Osaka appears increasingly capable of mounting a serious challenge for the Toronto crown.
Eala’s Fairytale Journey Comes to an End
The biggest story of the tournament, however, saw an unfortunate ending for Alex Eala.
The Filipina sensation, who arrived in Toronto fresh from capturing her maiden WTA title in Washington, was defeated 6-4, 6-0 by Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic in the fourth round.
Eala entered the match riding a seven-match winning streak and carrying the hopes of thousands of supporters who have followed her remarkable rise over recent months. However, Bencic’s experience proved decisive as the Swiss star converted six of her ten break-point chances and seized control after a closely contested opening set.
Despite the defeat, Toronto represented another significant milestone in Eala’s breakthrough season. The 21-year-old reached the fourth round of a WTA 1000 event, backed up her title success in Washington, and further established herself among the sport’s most exciting young talents.
Following her exit, Eala revealed that she plans to take a brief break before shifting her focus to the Cincinnati Open.
“I definitely will take maybe two days off. I need to get a haircut. I haven’t got a haircut in a while. My nails are grown out,” she said.
“So, yeah, I’ll do a couple things, just to get my mind off tennis. I think Toronto’s a great place to do that.”
While her winning streak may be over, Eala leaves Toronto with her reputation stronger than ever. Meanwhile, Gauff, Osaka and Rybakina remain firmly on course as the race for one of the biggest titles of the summer enters its decisive stage.
